Chapter Seventeen

West and I were like high schoolers who’d got kicked out of prom for sneaking vodka into the punch bowl or smoking pot under the bleachers.

“How do you feel about having a little fun?” I asked as we burst out of the manor. Just because our evening got cut short, it didn’t mean our night had to end yet.

West looked at me like I was crazy. Hell, maybe I was... but I knew he’d bite. He was every bit as crazy as me, and I already had a plan. A smile danced over my red lips. “You know how to hot wire a car, right?”

I nudged my head towards Giles’s classic Cadillac. There was no question it was his from the personalized plate. Who else would leave it in the most prominent spot to show off their success to the other guests? The piece of metal on wheels cost more than a normal person’s freaking house! Giles may have money in his bank account, but dollars couldn’t buy class. He was practically begging for someone to take it away. It’s about time someone taught the asshole a lesson.

“Obviously,” West said. It was a stupid question. Of course, he knew how to hot wire a car! He was a guy who treated waxing cars with the same attention to detail as a Korean skincare regime. “You want to go for a joyride?”

“Maybe.” I sauntered over to Giles’s car and ran my hand over the shiny hood. “But we’re not just gonna steal it, we’re gonna destroy it.”

West smirked. He needed no more persuasion. “It’s a good thing Giles is into vintage motors, and I know where the Briarly tool shed is...”

With all of Bryce’s staff inside assisting with the elaborate dinner service, it was easy for us to scale around the side of the building and for West to force his way into a small outbuilding, where the manor’s gardener stored his supplies. Next, all West needed was five minutes with a screwdriver and a hammer...

“You sure know your way around an engine,” I said, slipping into the passenger seat as Giles’s car whirred to life.

“Are you ready?” he asked, raising his eyebrows in anticipation.

“You said you used to be a racer,” I said, then winked. “Let’s relive your glory days.”

West slammed his foot on the gas and we sped down the drive, leaving a trail of dust and destruction in our wake. I stuck my hand out of the window and gave the manor a middle finger as we zoomed past the CCTV cameras monitoring the entrance.

Fuck you, Giles!

We wouldn’t make it far before he realized his precious toy was missing, but that made it even more fun. If Giles couldn’t play nice, then he shouldn’t play at all. I laughed, keeping the window open and letting the wind whip my hair into a frenzy.

“You’re a bad influence,” West said, but he couldn’t hide the wide grin spreading over his face as our speed climbed and we weaved through the empty roads like we were competing in the Grand Prix.
